The Adam Farouk Orchestra

So what's all this AFO business then?

The Adam Farouk Orchestra (of AFO) is one of my live music initiatives, and the only one built upon featuring myself as primary performer. The idea of such an ensemble has been gradually developed over the better part of a decade, but the band itself was only recently officially named and recognized, after realizing and surrendering to the fact that the sheer number of projects I work on concurrently prevents me from viably being able to be part of a permanent band. That and the draw of having the freedom to experiment stylistically from year to year, and the idea of a rotating "orchestra" started to make sense.

So what's the hook?

I suppose you could say that we work a little differently than most in that the band initiative is primarily a developmental outfit. The focus is on putting original music together in new and interesting ways. For example, the group has once been a "string trio" of guitar, violin, and upright bass; it's also been a full five-piece keyboard-based pop band. In both cases, arrangements have been tailored specifically to complement these combinations and highlight their unique qualities. This year (2014) the concept is streamlined and the inspiration has been the classical string quartet, however, we substitute guitars (and one bass) for where bowed strings would be. Repertoire does carry over from year to year, so the opportunity exists to see track develop, evolving from one arrangement and styling to another, going on a real musical journey in real time.

So what does that all mean?

What this means is that we do not typically have a set yearly "gig" schedule but rather prep for an annual series of limited engagements, house concerts, private events, that sort of thing. Band-squads are put together from year to year, gathering many of the best in the area, and the ensemble is tailored to both the year's concept and event(s). Right now our event schedule only includes private events, though we have been able to capture rudimentary video, that we will be posting soon here. Our next goal is to find a means to produce high quality streaming live concerts as well; we are currently developing this idea and will hope to have some news regarding it soon! For now, sit tight, and we'll look forward to seeing you in the cloud for a connective and energizing "live" musical experience sometime soon!

Keep up to date with news on the AFO via facebook or twitter ... I'll also be posting photos and links to videos on my tumblr, as well as, of course, adamfarouk.com.
